STEM Event

STEMulating Minds is hosting the 5th HoCo STEM Festival on June 4 from 1-5 in the brand new Science and Technology Building at HCC. This is a free, fun event. In its first four years, the Festival has drawn thousands of students and parents to explore the wide world of STEM.
This year, the Festival serves as a roadshow for the newly organized Million Women Mentors-Maryland program that encourages girls to follow STEM as a career path. 

June Workshops offered by Howard County Office of Children and Families:

Discipline and Communication Part 1 & 2 (double session)
Part 1: Set the stage for better behavior. Become familiar with temperament types and learn how to use this information to individualize your interactions with your child. Learn how to proactively prevent misbehavior by preparing your home and routine to encourage success. Discuss ways to effectively communicate with your child and the importance of structure, consistency and self-esteem to help build a growth mind set.
Part 2: Learn how to teach children self-control and problem-solving techniques that they can use in the moment of behavior problems. Establish rules and logical consequences for misbehavior that are developmentally appropriate. Discuss behavior charts and a variety of other options to encourage behaviors that you want to see. Leave with practical strategies and tools to implement immediately!
When: Wednesdays, June 7 & 14; 6:00-8:00 p.m.  Location: Ellicott City 50+ Fitness Center, 9411 Frederick Rd, Ellicott City, MD 21042 
Cost: $16 per person  Who Should Attend: Any parent, grandparent or caregiver who wants to improve their parenting skills and learn hands on ideas for raising a healthy, happy child ages birth to eight.

Setting Your Child Up for Success in Kindergarten

Is your child excited for the “big” school, but you are nervous for this next step? Need help feeling prepared to help your child in this transition? There are a lot of fun things that you can do now as they launch into learning for the fall. Attend this workshop to: Discuss ways to set your children up for success in reading, writing & math, Take a closer look at a typical kindergarten schedule, Leave with great activities and ideas to practice at home with your child as ….they prepare to head to kindergarten in the fall! 
When: Thursday, June 15, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.  Location: Bain 50+ Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way, Columbia, MD 21044
Cost: FREE! Space is limited; pre-registration is required  Who Should Attend: Parents and Guardians (no child care)
