NEWS & UPDATES

Welcome Back to School

8/15/2024

Welcoming back the Folly Quarter Staff to school Thursday, August 15.  Staff will be working hard to get the school ready for students on August 26th!

On Thursday, August 22, new student orientation is at 12:45 pm and open house will be from 4 pm to 5 pm.  Students can come check out their lockers and bring supplies to put in their lockers.  Parents should print out the schedule at home from HCPSS Connect or be ready to pull it up on a cell phone.  Schedule will contain the locker and combination information for your student.  School will not be printing out schedules.

Snowballs will be available for purchase after both events and should be consumed outside of the building.

FQMS PTSA 2024-2025 Board Nominations -

2/22/2024

Nominations are being sought for all positions on the board. Get involved and make a difference in the future of our community. FQMS only benefits from parents getting involved and staying involved. Several members of the board are moving on to high school this year, so we need people to volunteer to keep the PTA going.

Voting will take place at the May meeting where nominations can be taken from the floor. To be nominated, you must be a member of the PTA.

Please email [email protected] if you want to find out more information or wish to be nominated for a board position.

HCPSS Budget Cuts - HELP NEEDED!

2/15/2024

Attention Parents:
Our kids need your help!  HCPSS is currently in the process of establishing the operating budget for next school year, and we are in danger of having significant cuts to include:
  • Increased class sizes at all levels
  • Reduction of Elementary GT programs
  • Loss of 3rd grade Orchestra
  • Reduction of summer school programs
  • Loss of Media positions and programming
  • Combining High School science paraeducator position with testing assistant into one position
  • Reduction in curricular field trips and sixth grade team building activities
  • Decrease in custodial positions
We need parents to advocate for more funding for our school system!  What can I do?
  1. E-mail the BOE at [email protected] and ask them to request more money from the county so that we can continue to be a world class school system.  In addition, you can let the Board know what programs are most important to you and ask them NOT to increase class sizes.
  2. Contact the County Executive, Dr. Calvin Ball at [email protected] and the County Council at [email protected] to request that the county increase the money being allocated to HCPSS.  Let them know more money is needed to avoid cutting necessary services.
  3. Reach out to our state delegates and the governor to ask the state to increase the funding for schools so we can afford the new initiatives put forth by the Blueprint mandates. Let them know that without additional state funding positions and services critical to the operation of our schools and education of our students will be cut. Contact information and more details on advocating for the budget including sample emails can be found in the following document: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1tSBW3lrFhFOVzIB3wP2AckqtkKPE4UiV-JOeoiYkRSA/edit
  4. Show up to the Budget meetings, bring friends and neighbors, and testify in person if you can.  We need to demonstrate that our school system is important to us!

The sign at the entrance of FQMS is in a sad state of disrepair.  To honor the 20th anniversary Folly Quarter has served this community, we would like to replace it with an updated electronic sign.  FQMS PTSA is trying to raise $25,000 to pay for the new sign, but we still have a ways to go.
Please consider donating to this endeavor by clicking here.

If you would like to be a corporate sponsor, please contact [email protected].

Message from Mr. Babe, FQMS Principal

7/10/2023

Dear Folly Quarter families and community,
I am excited to join the Folly Quarter community as principal.  For the past several weeks, I have worked closely with Mrs. Clark and Mrs. Hewitt to ensure a smooth transition. I have also met with PTA President: Lisa Hirrlinger and Mrs. Hewitt and we have planned the 2023-2024 year full of fun events and activities for our kids, families, and staff.
I have learned that one of the greatest attributes about Folly Quarter is the people: the excellent students, dedicated staff, and supportive families. I want to share that there will be a few opportunities for “Meet and Greets” this summer. These events are a chance for you to meet me but also for me to learn from you about Folly Quarter.

Tuesday, July 25: Mr. Babe and Mrs. Hewitt will be at the Howard County Living Farm Museum (12985 Frederick Rd, West Friendship, MD 21794) for Food Truck Tuesday from 6:30 - 7:30 PM. There will be a food truck for families to choose to purchase dinner. Look for us wearing a Folly Quarter shirt.
Wednesday, August 2: Mr. Babe will have an additional meet and greet with anyone who wants to stop by Folly Quarter at 6:30 PM.
There may be an additional “Meet and Greet” opportunity and it will be shared later this summer.

Also, feel free to let me know your thoughts about what makes Folly Quarter amazing and what is a growth opportunity to make our school even better. Survey here.
I look forward to meeting you, supporting your child, and leading our fantastic school. I hope you have a restful summer.

Sincerely,
Mike Babe, Principal
Folly Quarter Middle
