Since its founding in 1983, MATHCOUNTS has grown to be the largest middle school math competition in the country. Approximately 140,000 students from all 50 states, U.S. territories and the State and Defense Department school systems worldwide participate annually in MATHCOUNTS. Students compete in multiple competitive events or “rounds”, such as the Sprint Round (where problems must be complete quickly) or the Team Round, in which a team of 4 collaborates to solve problems and may use calculators. FQMS will host a school level competition in January, participate in the chapter level competition in February against regional middle schools—commonly hosted at McDonogh School, and possibly advance to higher levels of competition such as the national championship in DC in May. More information about MATHCOUNTS can be found at www.mathcounts.org. In particular, the School Handbook available for download from the Resource menu provides lots of detail and also many exercises for team training.
